Gynaecomastia
Gynaecomastia surgery – Male Breast Reduction
Gynaecomastia is the abnormal enlargement of the breast tissue in males, which may affect one or both breasts. It occurs in 40-60% of males at some stage of their life. The causes of gynaecomastia may be secondary to certain drugs, medical problems or obesity but in the vast majority, the cause is unknown. For men with this problem, it is a source of embarrassment and surgery can help their appearance.
Surgery is directed at the specific problems affecting the patient. This may include a combination of excision of any breast gland tissue; liposuction of excess fat; and excision of redundant skin.
The scars of the breast reduction will depend on the technique of reduction performed by your surgeon.
Why it’s done
If enlarged breasts are significant and bothersome even after initial treatment or observation, your doctor may advise surgery.
Two gynecomastia surgery options are:
- Liposuction. This surgery removes excess fat but not breast tissue.
- Breast tissue excision. This type of surgery removes the breast gland tissue. The surgery is often done using only small incisions. This less invasive type of surgery involves less recovery time. With large breasts some excess skin may also have to be removed. Usually combined with some liposuction as well.
