Ganglion

Ganglion

A ganglion is a small fluid-filled swelling, most often attached to a joint or tendon in your wrist, hands or fingers. These lumps may come and go over time, at times causing an aching pain.

A ganglion appears as a round smooth lump or swelling under your skin. The size can range from a pea (small) to a plum (large). While ganglions are one of the most common causes of lumps in the hand, other causes may exist, and investigations such as ultrasound or MRI may be used to assist in diagnosis when this is uncertain.

Why it’s done

Removal of the ganglion along with its communication with the underlying joint or tendon sheath offers the best chance of permanent resolution.

If the ganglion causes discomfort or interferes with the use of your hand, a ganglion can be removed. There are two methods for removal:

  • In the first instance, bursting the ganglion with a needle and removing the contents by aspiration may be useful.
  • Cutting out the ganglion by surgery (excision). For persistent or larger lesions surgery to remove the sac of fluid and its communication may be more appropriate.
