EYELID SURGERY

EYELID SURGERY

The aim of blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is to refresh the appearance of the eyes by correcting drooping upper lids, or the “puffy bag” appearance of the lower lids. The same features that make you look and feel older and tired and may also be interfering with your vision.

In the upper eyelids excess skin and possibly a small amount of muscle or fat are removed. The lower lids are usually improved by redistributing the underlying fat and tightening the muscle with possible removal of a small amount of excess skin.

Lower blepharoplasty is performed to smooth the transition between the eyelid and the cheek by decreasing the appearance of dark circles and correcting the puffiness of lower eyelid skin.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is typically used to reduce the excess skin that causes a heavy appearance over the eyes. Sometimes skin excess is severe enough to interfere with vision.

Why it’s done

With this procedure we aim to reshape the upper and/or lower eyelids by removing and/or repositioning excess tissue, and in some cases reinforcing surrounding muscles and tendons. The surgery can help improve peripheral vision when performed on the upper eyelid if skin here is excessive. It will also give your eyes a more open and aware appearance.

The best candidates for an eye lift are people who are in good health and who have realistic expectations. Most are 35 years or older, but if baggy eyelids or droopy eyelids run in your family, you may decide to have the surgery done sooner.

Eyelid surgery can enhance your appearance and help build your confidence. However, it may not result in your ideal look or alter your facial structure. Before you decide to have surgery, think about your goals and discuss them with your surgeon.
